Today, locks and keys alone aren't enough to keep a premises perimeter secure against unwanted or uncontrolled visitors. Controlling access with greater certainty is the first line of defense to keep a facility secure.

Access control typically consists of electronic and/or physical control processes. A mix of technology and passive barriers can secure a site perimeter.

Once this is accomplished, the next step is to control access to building interiors without disrupting facility functions and activities. Perimeter security keeps unwanted individuals out. Inside the building, access control can address concerns about internal theft and limit the movement of both employees and visitors. Each building presents different challenges and requires a unique set of security solutions

Few types of technologies are available for such control:

Card Access (eg RFID card and reader)

RFID has been used primarily to track and protect assets. Typically, an access control applications for RFID where a user carries a tag that unlocks the door to a room or location when the person approaches the reader.

Biometrics

Biometrics are automated methods of recognizing a person based on a physiological or behavioral characteristic that provide greater security and convenience.

Locks

The most basic access control and that are available, the use of locks goes back to the beginning of recorded history. Men have always been concerned with protecting their property from others. Locks have now evolved into highly secured and vandal-poof devices.
